The Edge Isn’t Talent. It’s Training.
The creator who can train his mind to work while feeling tired, broke, or uninspired, has a massive edge over the one who waits for "inspiration."
The edge isn’t in beauty. It’s in delivery of the goods.
They call themselves artists, but they’re addicts.
Addicted to Instagram drama.
To artistic debates on Reddit on whether to go digital or stay with analog tools
They're doomscrolling their dreams into fairy dust.
Because this game isn’t about mood.
It’s about momentum.
Studios don’t hire the prettiest panels.
They hire the ones that arrive on time.
Discipline is a superpower.
The brilliant but erratic creator who can deliver greatness on occasion burns out.
The disciplined one finishes his work for the day, resets his desk, lays out tomorrow’s pencils, and shows up again.
And again.
The real flex isn’t genius.
It’s consistency.
You have trained yourself to keep the needs of your clients before your artistic standards.
And have made space for your dreams within that space.
That is creativity being engaged above and beyond what the average artist puts into his craft.
It takes ingenuity to find that specific and narrow path to give your audience what they want, yet being able to drop hints of your higher artistic ideals within the apparent commercial art.
You achieve that through constant creating, sharing, iterating, and sharing again.
The disciplined ones have learned that the good dopamine hit comes from the doing.
You have integrated the doing with your artistic dreams.
The end result will always be up for debate once it’s in the public’s eye.
But while they argue whether it’s good or bad, you’re on the next thing.
“Don't think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it's good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.”
― Andy Warhol
You are special.
You have developed your skills, but you have also developed focus.
You are part of the rare 1% who can focus for an hour + a day.
You can accomplish more than they can imagine.
One of the most difficult things anyone can do in 2025 is focus. (For your entire career and life, really. As tech evolves, and more sophisticated ways to hijack and retain your attention appear, you will have to constantly level up how you keep your focus on what you want to achieve.)
Everything around us is designed to grab and hold our attention for as long as they can. Most people ignore this.
To them this is a default setting. They’ve convinced themselves that’s just the way things are, and have not attempted to develop their focus and concentration skills.
This means your competition is weak.
You want an even greater edge over them?
Do this:
Wake up. No phone.
3 sets of 30 crunches.
3 sets of 20 pushups.
Ten minutes of writing.
Then get to work.
That’s how comics get drawn.
That’s how films get made.
That’s how businesses begin.
That’s how you win.
Most won’t take up this challenge.
But you’re not like most.
This reminds me of that Austin Kleon line (paraphrased) 'Forget the noun, do the verb.' You don’t need to be a creative, you just need to create."
Happy Wednesday Jay!
