Laserhawk (1997)

Great Idea, Poor Execution

This is my little space to share underseen media and pop culture nodal points with other fellow geeks. If my posts delight you and encourage you to seek out these titles, please consider buying me a Ko-Fi. Your support helps me to bring you more forgotten gems in pop culture.

Past Halloween now, in that relatively quiet space before Thanksgiving and the mania of the Holidays.

Laserhawk is a great example of:

Great idea + somewhat adequate execution = fairly watchable movie

It drags a bit at times, and it does a low-key bait and switch by showing Mark Hamill on the cover and giving him top billing, when his screen time is limited.

But it offers a lot for a straight-to-video sci-fi-thriller. If you’re a fan of:

  • Mysteries, whodunits, and thrillers

  • Video games where the mechanics dictate that you participate in the search for items

  • Meta-narratives where the movie turns its own narrative on itself in a smart way

  • Learning storytelling by studying the ratio of idea-vs-execution of a movie

  • Like stories where the outcast becomes the hero

Then you’ll enjoy this one.

Two pleasant surprises:

A strong female character without the movie having to advertise it on the marketing.

The Hero’s Journey for the main character.

Laserhawk is a great for a Saturday afternoon watch.

Are the visual effects on Laserhawk great? No! But that’s part of its charm.
In alternate VHS/DVD covers Mark Hamill’s face is huge, but his billing is out of proportion to his screen time.
