Mission Impossible II (2000)

The Extreme 2000s

A Pop Culture Detective Case File Extra!

Extreme!!!!! That’s what comes to mind when re-watching the second entry in the Mission Impossible Franchise ahead of release of The Final Reckoning. It’s interesting to see how for a brief time before 9/11, the entertainment industry was caught up in the extreme lifestyle of X Games to the point that they made a series of films around it, one of the most notable being Triple X.

In their extreme fever Hollywood must have thought somehow that John Woo was a good fit to take their Extreme vision of the next installment in the Mission Impossible franchise to the big screen. Though John Woo is internationally known for amazing action set pieces, but he places as much importance on the quiet moments between characters as he does on the action. If you’re not familiar with his work check our A Better Tomorrow I and II, The Killer, and Hard Boiled.

But let me not keep you any longer. Tune in and reminisce of an Extreme time in American pop culture.

They are releasing Mission Impossible editions with red cover. I feel they match the increasing intensity of the franchise, and this one is brimming with intensity.
